Acura MDX Prototype [w/Gallery]

Thu, 17 Jan 2013

The Acura MDX Prototype has made its world debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Providing a glimpse of the design direction for the third generation of the performance luxury SUV, the MDX Prototype was designed under the theme of ‘Aero Sculpture' and has low, wide proportions on a longer wheelbase.

The signature Acura Jewel Eye LED headlights feature while the arcing roofline is 38.1mm lower than the outgoing model. The concept's pentagonal grille is now a well-established characteristic of the Acura brand identity while the embossed shield that partly covers the grille opening first seen on the outgoing model remains.

A smooth character line emerges from the headlamps and stretches backwards before tucking in above the rear lamps, emphasizing the MDX Prototype's wide flanks. This is highlighted again by a shorter but no less prominent line that starts from behind the wheelarch and ends between the B- and C-pillars.

Acura was not showing the interior at the show but Jon Ikeda, chief designer of Acura Design Studio, says that the designers have been working on "amping up luxury, comfort and quiet". The vehicle's all-new chassis and body design and new sound-deadening techniques have enhanced cabin quietness.
